Misleading

India's stock market lagged others in 2026 data. The listed returns for Kuwait, Vietnam, Pakistan, Taiwan, South Korea and others are wrong, and no global crisis matches the reel.

Why we say that

India's -3.7% return is real. What doesn't hold: most country figures here are false or outdated.

India's negative 1-year return holds in recent data. The specific percentages shown for almost every other country do not match current tradingeconomics reports for the same period. The reel implies a unique failure under Modi during a clear global crisis. Sources show the graphic is cherry-picked or old and no consensus 2008-style crisis exists in 2026.

Based on only a few sources, so read this as a first look, not the last word.

The facts don't add up to the point it's making

India's negative return is real. The exact foreign returns, the claim India is the only negative one, and the existence of a matching global crisis are not supported. The numbers and crisis framing do not establish unique failure.

What it leaves out

The graphic does not specify exact dates, benchmark indices used, or currency of returns.

From reporting

What else it leaves out (3)
  • No established 2008-style global crisis exists in mid-2026. Markets show volatility and bearish forecasts instead.
  • Many other major markets (European indices, Russia, global benchmarks) are omitted and some also negative.
  • The same graphic with near-identical numbers has circulated before with the same criticism of cherry-picking.
How it's framed (4)
Visual contrast - Image pairs smiling Narendra Modi at a podium with Nirmala Sitharaman, placing the negative India return directly next to her in a split-screen layout to visually associate underperformance with the Modi government.
Highlighting absence - Repeated emphasis on India being the 'ONLY' negative market, with specific callout to Pakistan outperforming at +59%, using loaded language ('worst performing markets, worst performing currency. Still we are Vishwaguru') to imply exceptional failure and irony.
Selective data - Presents a curated list of 10 countries where India is uniquely negative and others strongly positive, without showing other major markets (e.g. Many European indices, Russia, or broader global benchmarks) that may have also been negative or lower.
Sarcasm - Sarcastic caption tone mocks the 'Vishwaguru' (world guru) claim in light of poor market and currency performance during a 'global crisis'.
